Let Your Good Goals Grow

What a week it's been kicking off our PowerSheets Prep Work alongside each of you! Together, we've started working on the first 33 pages of our PowerSheets, and we've uncovered so many good things for the year ahead. Want to peek at all we've done this week, here you go!

Still working on your Prep Work? That's great! Take the time you need to focus on these pages; you won't hear us rushing you!

There is a lot of pressure in today's world. Whether it's pressure put on us by others or pressure we put on ourselves, it can oftentimes feel overwhelming to get started on anything new. A fear of failure or underachievement oftentimes stops us dead in our tracks and paralyzes us from taking any action on the things that matter to us.

That's not what this is about. Around here, we believe in grace-filled goal-setting. We believe in community and encouragement. We believe that little by little progress pays off, and good things grow in our lives over time. While others go at their goals alone, we share our goals and progress, cheering each other on and offering a lot of high fives along the way!

Progress_Not_Perfection

PowerSheets Prep Week is only the beginning! We are going to let our goals marinate for a few days, but we're sure to share them with you in the coming weeks!

In the meantime, our team is ready to encourage and equip you to make your unique goals happen in 2018. We're ready to help you prioritize, sift through the junk, and stop saying yes to all the things so you can say yes to the right things.

How To Crush Comparison Once and For All

Welcome back to Day Four of PowerSheets Prep Week! Just joining us? That's great! We started our PowerSheets Prep Work early so you would have everything you need when you're ready to get started. Check out day one, two, and three here!

Today we're focusing on pages 26-31 of our PowerSheets Prep Week, and we can't wait to dive in!We'll be sharing our progress on Instagram stories today, so make sure to follow along! We're getting into a really fun part of the Prep Work, but there might still be some lingering feelings from yesterday's section (I heard that from a lot of you on social media!)

My PowerSheets Prep Work changes from year to year, but I've also found there are some years where I write repeating things. Yesterday, I found that comparison kept showing up on my "no" list. I had to remind myself that while others look to other people's goals and progress to define their own, that's not what we do here. We uncover our own unique path and goals, and we make it happen.

PowerSheets_Inside_Pages

But before doing that, we often have to fight the comparison trap. Here are a few tips on how to stay on your unique path:

Turn comparison into celebration. Admiration points us towards what we value most. And when we become aware of what we value, we are much better positioned to create a life that means something to us. When you're focused on celebrating instead of comparison, there's a shift in your heart. Instead of fuming and coveting, you'll find that over time your heart will slowly bend towards celebrating, making it easy to send the congratulatory email or "double tap" that photo on Instagram.

Cultivate a heart of gratitude. When you stop to think about it, we compare ourselves because we are discontent. Fight comparison by nurturing daily thankfulness. You can start small; here are seven easy (and free) ways to get started!

Pursue greater things. In the same way that gratitude will help you fight discontentment and comparison, pursuing greater things–things that really matter to you–is going to help you focus. Not sure what those greater things are? OurPowerSheets Prep Work will help you uncover good goals–goals that are connected to what matters to YOU and no one else–and then do something about them. Staying on your unique path will give you confidence.

Remove the comparison traps entirely. For me, practically speaking, this means unfollowing certain people on social media. It means unsubscribing from all the J. Crew marketing emails. Where are the areas in your life where you most often find yourself succumbing to the comparison trap? Start by eliminating those.

What to Do With Lingering Goals

Welcome back to PowerSheets Prep Week, friends! It's the middle of the week, so I have to ask you: how are you feeling? If you’re anything like us, you’ve likely uncovered some pretty surprising things over these past 20 pages of your PowerSheets Prep Work.

Are you just joining us? That's great! You came at the right time! You can see Day One and Day Two of PowerSheets Prep Week here, and we can't wait to uncover good goals alongside you!

We’re going to spend today focusing on pages 20-25 in the Prep Work (one of my favorite parts!): the good things from the past year, the challenges, and lessons learned from those. Then, we’ll use what we learned to help you spring forward into 2018.

What did filling out your PowerSheets Cultivated Life Evaluation on pages 12-13 yesterday teach you? Where are you right now? I’d wager that while there are areas of your life where you’re pretty satisfied, there are others waiting for radical change. And guess what! That’s a good thing!

Cultivated Life

Others might ignore what’s not working in their lives, carrying on as if everything is okay, but not us. In order to leap into the new, we first must know from where we are leaping. We are starting with where we are and what we have because before we can move forward, we have the opportunity to learn from the past.

But, first. What to do with all those pesky lingering goals?

Figure out why it's still there. If you haven't made progress on this goal, ask yourself why? Is it connected to something that matters to you, or is it just another to-do on your long list? Is it because you don't have time to do it? Do you need to buy supplies to accomplish it? Whatever it is, get to the root of why it's still lingering.

Put them on your PowerSheets. The brand new Goal Action Plan Worksheets have been adjusted to help you break your goals down into little action steps. We listened to your suggestions and gave you two pages for each of your 2018 goals to start brainstorming action steps and ways to get started.

Give yourself a deadline. If you need a kick in the pants, then set a date and give yourself a deadline to finish it. Bonus points if you tell someone that deadline and ask them to hold you accountable.

Release yourself from the goals. If this goal isn't rooted in what matters to you or if it's something you're doing to please other people, then let it go, friend. Don't listen to any voices in your head telling you that you are a quitter. It's not true at all. If you're not ready to let them go completely, then consider punting them for a few months.

Starting Fresh: How It’s Possible and Why It’s Necessary

Welcome back to Day Two of PowerSheets Prep Week! Day one was a lot of fun! We are having so much fun sharing our PowerSheets Prep Work with each of you! Are you following us on Instagram stories? It's been fun to share what we uncovered in the first few pages of our Prep Work with you yesterday!

In the same way the seasons cycle through year after year, we often find ourselves in need of the same fresh starts, too. Perhaps you're feeling inadequate, overwhelmed, lost or unsure of your path right now. Maybe you're worried starting fresh is going to change you. So you hesitate.

Others wander aimlessly, not setting goals at all, but that's not what happens around here. We set out on a fresh, purposeful path by uncovering cultivated goals. And then we do something about them (but that comes later this week 😉)

What_Matters_Most

So how does one start fresh? We have five tips to help you start fresh today:

Evaluate where you are. This is always the tricky one, isn't it? Don't we often just want to look ahead and say, "That's where I want to be! That's my goal!" But there's a reason we have 33 pages of PowerSheets Prep Work before we do that! It may be hard and scary, but honestly evaluate each area of your life. You can give it a number or letter rating (we do numbers in our Cultivated Life Evaluation), and then sit with that. Don't reach for your phone or a TV show or a book. Reflect on those feelings without trying to change them or push them away. Don't get stuck in the negative soil! You can write out areas of progress even in the midst of the areas that need to be cultivated. Each area you evaluate is a potential area of your life that could be made completely new.

Learn from your past, and let it go. I won't make a Frozen reference here (though feel free to listen to Elsa's anthem for inspiration), but I will tell you that moving forward requires letting go of something first. It means accepting and believing that you have control over your emotions. It can be tempting to fast-forward over this, but sit with it as long as you need. Good things grow through the dirt.

Face your fears. My senior year of college, I was rear-ended and my car was totaled. It was a pretty traumatic experience for my 21-year-old self, and my father came into town to help with the insurance claims, doctor visits, and rental car pick-up,. When it came time to hop in his car to start our errands, he handed me the car keys and said, "Jessie, if you don't get behind the wheel right now, you're going to be scared of driving for the rest of your life." Needless to say, I was terrified, but he was right. Fear can hold you back from making what matters happen. Challenge yourself to write your honest feelings and fears, even the things that are scary that you don't want to write. Why? Seeing your fears allows you to face them and then move forward.

Define what matters most to you. Good goals are about cultivating what you've been given well: your relationships, your money, your possessions, your work, your home, your health, and your time. A little intentional forethought goes a long way, so take some time to reflect, and ask yourself, "What matters most to me?"

Make a plan, and stick to it! We love the accountability that comes with writing down your goals in our 2018 PowerSheets One-Year Goal Planner. It's 12 months of worksheets, prompts, and monthly Tending Pages to help keep you on track for making your goals happen (that's less than $5 a month if you do the math!). Even if you aren't a PowerSheets user, you can still write down your goals and put them in a prominent place. Keep them in front of you so you can constantly re-evaluate where you are and where you are headed.
