As we continue to move through the Mid-Year Refresh, we wanted to share with you a few books our team is reading (and loving!) during the month of June. From challenging and convicting books on racial injustice to light-hearted fiction reads, here are a few book recommendations from our team.
Book: Their Eyes Were Watching God
Picked by: Kaylee, Chief Operating Officer
She says: “I love a good fiction book to read on the beach in the Summer and wanted to diversify by choosing a novel from a Black author. I would definitely give Zora Neale Hurston’s classic “Their Eyes Were Watching God” five stars—strong female lead, beautiful imagery, and loved the unique way she wrote highlighting the southern dialect.”
Book: Kitchen Garden Revival
Picked by: Irene, Designer
She says: “It was both inspiring and practical for our family goals of living outside this summer and growing our own kitchen garden. It got me excited not just for this current season, but to make our kitchen garden a year round part of our family life.”
Book: The Color of Compromise
Picked by: Abbie, Executive Assistant
She says: “It's been so enlightening and eye-opening. Really giving me a soft heart to the times our world is going through, as well as better understanding the historical background behind it.”
Book: The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry
Picked by: Mackenzie, Customer Success Manager
She says: “I loved it because it really opened my eyes to how much time I waste doing things that aren't important and how unhealthy it is to be in a hurry. The author also talks about how it's the norm for our society to always be in a hurry and I'm realizing how challenging it can be to break that habit.”
Book: The Secrets of Happy Families
Picked by: Emily, Creative Director and Chief of Staff
She says: “One of my 2020 goals is to build our family culture, and this book gave me lots of practical ideas to try. I especially loved the chapter on family mission statements, since that’s something my husband and I are working on right now!”
Book: The Magic of Motherhood
Picked by: Julie, Marketing Director
She says: "I keep The Magic of Motherhood on my nightstand. I love to read an essay or two each week to encourage me as a mama! I love reading stories from other moms and glean as much wisdom as I possibly can from their experiences. Madeline also let me borrow a fiction book from her collection, Long Way Gone. It was a delightful read over my vacation earlier this month!"
