How to Turn Your Word of the Year into a Phone Background

"What one word resonates most with you for the year ahead, pulling together all that you want to make happen?"

This question in the PowerSheets Prep Work fires me up because it gives me a focus for my time, energy, and goals. Personally, I went back and forth between a few different words as I worked through my PowerSheets, and I love the word I ended up settling on: ROOTED.

Now that I've settled on my word for the year (and the Cultivate team has chosen ours as well!), I've been looking for a way to incorporate it into my every day life, particularly something I touch each and every day!

Enter our Word of the Year phone background! We were looking for a way to help you get your word of the year in front of you each day, and what better way than by being intentional with your phone background!

Here's a screenshot of how I used the iPhone background to write in my word of the year! It'll serve as a great reminder for me!

  1. Download our free iPhone background, and save it to your Photos.
  2. Click "Edit" in the top, right-hand corner of the photo.
  3. Click the circle with three dots, and choose Markup.
  4. Choose a pen, and write in your word of the year!
  5. Click "Done" and use as your wallpaper!

Still deciding on your word of the year? That's okay, too! Bookmark this post, and come back to it once you've finished your PowerSheets Prep Work! 2018 Goals Round-Up

Can I tell you a secret? One of my favorite parts of my role as Community Manager is coming across your PowerSheets when browsing the PowerSheets hashtag or spending time in the PowerSheets Facebook Group! (Seriously, if you need some encouragement, just head over there!) My particular favorites are reading each of your blog posts about your annual and monthly goals! I love when you share them on social media or in the PowerSheets Facebook group, and we love rounding up some of your goals each month on the blog!

We're kicking off 2018 strong–with a combination of some 2018 goals and January goals below. The best part about the PowerSheets is they can be used by anyone in any season of life. We hope these round-ups give you some inspiration for making progress on your own unique goals this year!

Keep sharing your goals with us! We love knowing what you're working towards, and it helps us plan content that will be most beneficial to you!

Is cultivating your finances on your 2018 Goals? If so, check out AJ's daily goal! It might be a great one to add to your Tending List!

Thuy and I have an overlapping goal this year to take 100 barre classes, so I'm particularly excited to cheer  her on!

Setting goals can seem pretty easy with the PowerSheets process (if you put in the work), but sometimes the first step is the hardest! Mattie outlined her 2018 goals, and a few initial action steps she's taking to make them happen.

I love reading Diana's goal recaps because she shares openly and honestly about her progress (not perfection!) Check out her December recap, and read her first set of goals for January!

Reyna's color-coded 2018 goals has my heart singing!

Need a pep talk about why there's nothing magical about January 1st? Head to Chelsey's post to read all about how she approaches her goals!

Starting steps are key to keeping up with momentum and not trying to do everything at once. Check out Kory's starting steps for her six goals!

Lindsay's broader, overarching goals guide her on a path of becoming who she wants to be, and I love how she thought holistically when creating them!

If you've posted your goals somewhere, we'd love to see them! Feel free to drop them in the comments, too-no fancy blog required! We can't wait to take a peek and cheer you on!

Don't have PowerSheets yet, and feeling behind? You're in luck! We have our Six-Month PowerSheets Goal Planner available in three fun colors–Poppy Pink, Teal, and White! These are undated, and they're shipping now, so you can dig in as soon as you get them!

How to Make a Tending List

You've pushed through the PowerSheets Prep Work, created goals that are connected to what matters most to you, flip the page to your January Tending List... and you're stuck.

How in the world do you break down those big goals into smaller action steps for your Tending List? How do you decide what to focus on each month? How do you create a Tending List with action steps connected to your goals, and not just another to-do list?

We're here to share our best tips for taking a blank page and turning it into a Tending List you'll look at each day!

Don't try to do it all at once. I thought about calling this one "easy tiger" because I know how it feels to be roaring to go! You 're feeding off the momentum of setting your best goals, and you're ready to dive in and accomplish all the things!

Review your goals. Whether it's your first Tending List or your fiftieth, don't lost sight of what you're working towards! Look at action plan overview and your Goal Refresh sections (if applicable), and start from there.

Look at starting steps in Goal Action Overview Pages. Are there steps that you wrote out that fall into the current month or season? Great! Move those to the Brain Stream page in your monthly Tending section. Remember in the PowerSheets Prep Work when we asked you:which 3 areas of your life do you most want to cultivate moving forward? Pay extra attention to those goals!

Pay attention to what's ahead. The Prepare Well page in your Monthly Tending pages help you know what's on your calendar, important to-dos, and things you're excited about and want to celebrate in the coming months. Don't stop at your personal paper or digital calendar. Be sure to check your significant other's work calendar, your children's school calendar, and birthdays and anniversaries for loved ones.

Write all your ideas down. Write out all you want to cultivate or accomplish this month: goals you want to take action on, habits you want to grow, ways you'll rest or recharge, and relationships you want to cultivate.

Simplify. I know what you're thinking! "But Jess, you just told me to write them all down!" Once you've written everything you think you want to do this month on paper, it's time to cut it down and focus on the most important things! Don't be afraid to get messy–circle a priority, scratch things out, and highlight to your heart's content to help you start to get a visual for what's ahead. I find it particularly helpful to use different colors on my Brain Stream page to differentiate between monthly, weekly, and daily goals.

Start each action step with a verb. Once you've decided what's going on your Tending List, start filling it in! Starting each of your goals with an action verb makes it less passive, and will give you a kick in the pants each time you read it!

Color-code to stay focused. We're so excited our Goal-Setting Sticker Book includes color-coding tools to help you see progress on your yearly goals and remind you of where you're going each month. Are you a color-coding first timer like me? We have some great tips for you to get started!

Don't overthink it. No one expects you to have perfect goals each and every month. After all, this is different than traditional goal setting. It's grace-filled goal setting! Commit to daily tending. Our lives bloom through daily decisions and habits–not just the giant leaps made once in a while. Lean into the little by little progress, and be willing to celebrate all that you do accomplish in the coming weeks!

Put next month's PowerSheets Prep Day on your calendar! The Cultivate Team uses the last Friday of each month to do our PowerSheets Prep Work. , and we love sharing it on Instagram stories to encourage you! Whether you join us on that day or use a different one, go ahead and mark it in your calendar!

Introducing our Word of the Year

Each December, our team works through a set of company PowerSheets to help us navigate heading into the new year. Every team member has a voice, answering each question and prompt, including offering suggestions goals, encouraging words, and ideas for our Word of the Year.

Our word of the year is more than just a word we choose once and leave be. It's displayed in the office, we remind each other of it during team meetings, and each team members has a slip of paper with our core values and WOTY on it attached to her computer. We take choosing our Word of the Year seriously, though we also know there is room for flexibility in the PowerSheets Goal Refresh every three months! And judging by the number of you discussing your Word of the Year in the Facebook Group, I'd say you feel similarly!

I'm excited to share our team's Word of the Year today, and more importantly, why we view it as an opportunity for each of you, too.

When Lara shared the Hebrew root of the word RISE during our conversation, it all clicked for us:

To abide or accomplish
To confirm
To be clearer
To raise up
To strengthen
To succeed
To build
To make binding
To carry out
To make good

Each product in our shop is intentional. We create them to help YOU cultivate what matters in your life, right where you are. Whether you're looking to cultivate your marriage, your friendships, your faith, your family, or set good goals, our hope is to provide products and resources to encourage you along the way.

This year, more than ever before, our team is rising up to our potential. It's a year of growth for us–a year of stepping into the unknown. A year of saying no to doing what's always worked, and saying yes to what makes our heart sing. A year of saying yes to hiring new team members. A year of humbly serving others. A year of embracing challenges as opportunities, and having a lot of fun along the way. Most of all, it's a year of continually growing ourselves and our impact, not for the sake of growth, but because each of us firmly believe that our mission can encourage each and every woman on this planet.

Our favorite part about the word RISE? It means we get to take other with us. Like the aphorism says, "a rising tide lifts all boats." As we enter into 2018 prepared to make good on our mission to encourage and equip you to cultivate what matters, we look forward to knowing we're doing it alongside an incredible community–each of you! As our team steps out in faith to rise to our potential, we're asking you to do the same alongside us, believing the best is yet to come.

Your turn! Have you chosen your word of the year yet? If so, I'd leave it in the comments and let us know! If not, what are you leaning towards? We want to hear from you!

Feeling stumped on your word of the year? We wrote a blog post earlier this year with some of our best tips for choosing your word of the year.
