Why You Don’t Need PowerSheets To Set Goals

Today can be your January 1st. I know what you're going to say because I've heard it a lot since we sold out of our 2017 PowerSheets a few weeks ago: "Jess, I need #PowerSheets and you're sold out! I can't start fresh without PowerSheets!"

What I'm about to say probably goes against every marketing tactic out there, but I'm going to say it anyway:

You don't actually need our PowerSheets to start cultivating an intentional life.

Are PowerSheets a tool that helps you organize your thoughts and dreams and break those down into action steps? I wholeheartedly believe so.

Is it helpful to have a beautiful spiral-bound workbook to keep everything together? Yes.

Are you more motivated to stay on track when you've spent money on and invested in a tool? Maybe.

But here's the thing: You can start right where you are. It's not the product that matters; it's the work you put into it. You don't have to have a PowerSheets Workbook to start setting intentional goals. In fact, if you wait until 2018 PowerSheets come out this fall, you are doing yourself a disservice by not taking advantage of the momentum and excitement you feel right now.

So what do you do while you wait? Here are some great places to start (some are even free!):

  • In her 2017 Goal-Setting Series, Lara walks through her personal PowerSheets prep and goals for the year. It's a great place to follow along, with a notebook and pen in hand. There are five parts, and here is a direct link to Part One.
  • The Cultivate blog is full of great tips and tricks that are applicable even if you don't have PowerSheets in hand! Equal parts encouragement, behind the scenes of what's happening in the office, and practical to-dos, it's a great place to find resources for some of your action steps.
  • Lara's first book, Make It Happen, incorporates some of the same prompts from the PowerSheets process. Work through this by yourself or with a buddy.
  • Our Couples and Parents Companion Guides are a great resource to help you set goals with your significant other or for your family. If youre looking to cultivate friendships, our Fruitful Friendships Workbook is for you! We created these guides to use in conjunction with your PowerSheets, but they're full of great conversation starters and resources!
  • The Making Things Happen Conference is coming back in March 2018! Tickets officially went on sale yesterday, and you can save your seat and secure the early bird price today! I know you'll have PowerSheets in hand by then, but trust me, this intensive was created to give you a solid foundation and action plan. It was created to help you simplify your life and gain clear direction.

For those of you reading this that don't have PowerSheets in hand, I'm going to challenge you to something today. Make a decision to spend the rest of the year intentionally cultivating what matters. Write it down, and start making little by little progress on it.

The Cultivate team is always ready to answer your questions, remind you to focus on your why, and be your biggest cheerleaders. We are on this journey with you!

Making Things Happen is Happening in 2018

We're thrilled to be releasing tickets for our 2018 Spring Making Things Happen Conference in Chapel Hill, NC on March 19-20, 2018!

The Making Things Happen Conference is unlike any other conference. MTH is the work you do before investing in other conferences. Before you take action on what’s important to you, you have to know where you’re going. This intensive was created to give you a solid foundation and action plan. It was created to help you simplify and gain direction. One of the most tangible ways I can describe MTH to you is simply this: MTH is like PowerSheets in person.

I know there are many of you out there who weren't able to get a set of 2017 PowerSheets. While they're not exactly the same (obviously, the price point is quite different!), we truly believe that the experience of attending the Making Things Happen Intensive is similar to walking into a set of PowerSheets–but far, far better! We often describe PowerSheets as a guided coaching tool, but at MTH, you actually DO have a guide and a coach: Lara Casey herself and a group of accountability partners.

I know what you're thinking. "That sounds great and all, Jess, but March 2018 is months away and I can't afford to think that far ahead."

Allow me to politely respond with this: You simply can't afford NOT to think that far ahead.

MTH is about digging deep, establishing priorities, uncovering a purposeful vision for your life and business, and discovering how to make what matters most happen. Making Things Happen was founded on the idea that you have the choice to change your life. This time is an investment in you and your future. We prioritize what is important to us. Register for your seat today, add it to your calendar, and plan to be there with us!

Our Encouragement Crew gives the best welcome hugs! Photo by Carrie Joy Photography

You can read much more about Making Things Happen, as well as testimonials from our most recent class of attendees, here. If you'd like to learn more, we'd also encourage you to watch the replay of a previous webinar with Lara and a few MTH alums from all different backgrounds to see if the experience might be right for you.

If you're on the fence, now is the time. We intentionally chose not to host a Fall 2017 MTH, which means we have friends who have been waiting upwards of a year to register for Spring 2018. I have a feeling this might be the quickest sell-out, so don't delay in registering. Payment plans are available.

Questions? Leave a comment below and we'll happily answer them!

P.S. We're giving away a scholarship seat in memory of one of our dear long-time friends, Yvette Price, who embodied all that we teach at MTH. She was courageous in her battle with cancer and made what matters happen despite great challenges. She grew what would last longer than her: a whole lot of love and joy in the lives of others. In her honor, we're excited to give away one seat to either an alum or new attendee. This scholarship is for the full ticket price not including travel or accommodations. Enter to win the Yvette Price Scholarship over on Lara's blog by July 31st!

Join us at our 2018 PowerSheets Photo Shoot

We say this often but it bears repeating: we created the PowerSheets to help women in all seasons of life uncover purpose-filled goals and plan action steps to cultivate what matters, right where they are. They are not exclusively for mothers or business owners; they can be used by anyone who needs a grace-filled system that works!

As we prep for our 2018 PowerSheets Launch this fall, we want to incorporate more of our PowerSheets users into our product imagery. That means we need your help!

We're looking for a diverse group of women–all ages and all seasons of life–who aren't afraid of being in front of the camera to join us for our 2018 PowerSheets photo shoot on Monday, August 21st, 2017 in Raleigh, NC.

If you’re interested, please send an email to email (at) with the subject line: PowerSheets Photo Shoot. Due to the high volume of emails, we might not be able to respond individually, but we are so grateful for your replies! If you are having issues, email Jess at

In your email, please include the following:

  • Your name and location
  • A few recent photos (no need for professional photos–we just want to see your smile!)
  • Your height
  • Answer the following questions:
    • How long have you been using PowerSheets?
    • What are some of your 2017 goals?
    • How have PowerSheets changed goal-setting for you?

You might get some bonus points if you add a selfie of you with your PowerSheets :) We promise it’s going to be a blast, and we can't wait to hear from you!

Please note that you must be 18 or older to apply, and we are not able to compensate for travel/participation.

The Cultivate Book Launch Party

Friends, what a joyful day celebrating the start of summer and the release of Lara's second book, Cultivate! When we started planning the Cultivate Book Launch Party, we knew we wanted it to be about more than the book. Lara spent the past 2.5 years writing (and rewriting) these words to tell this story. While the words in these pages are glimpses into Lara's life, we knew that the story she was telling was much bigger. It was an invitation to a cultivating an intentional life, right where you are, mess and all. It was a joy to see so many old and new friends alike, and we had a blast celebrating with friends from near and far.

The backdrop of our event was the Barn of Chapel Hill, and it was even more stunning than it appears here. I mentioned this in the Facebook Live I did during the party, but the Barn of Chapel Hill is much more than just a pretty venue—it's a wild flora farm that specializes in cut flowers, honey, chestnuts, educational farm tours, floral workshops, and events. When Kara was sharing all the wonderful things planned for the fall (including you-pick flowers!), I knew I'd have to make a trip back when I'm in town again!

Our photographer and cheerleader for the day! Traci was in office with us packaging up supplies when we first started brainstorming this party, and she immediately said, "Oh, I would love to photograph this!" We knew right away we were in good hands, and it was hard for me to narrow down the 1,100+ pictures for this post because they were all so wonderful!

Cultivate Book Launch 0001

When we started talking about a book launch party, our friend Madeline of Jolie Joie Designs reached out and offered to send Cultivate What Matters cards as favors. Having seen her work firsthand from previous events like MTH, we knew we had to say yes, and we were so glad to send these home with guests to remind them of the heart behind Cultivate.

Cultivate Book Launch 0006

Not only did theBarn of Chapel Hill team provide a beautiful backdrop; they did all the florals you see! We loved having local flowers included in the celebration. Aren't they the perfect compliment to the book cover?

A dear friend of ours, Lauren of Instead of Ashes, did all the signage and chalkboards for the event, and it was the perfect touch! My favorite part? Her hand-lettering has shown up in a variety of places in the office, including Gracie's Garden and our encouragement for Lara in her final days of book-writing.

When brainstorming different stations with Kara of the Barn of Chapel Hill, Ashlee and I couldn't help but get excited when she mentioned a DIY floral cuff station. Their lead florist, Jen, helped all our guests create the sweetest floral cuffs to wear during our garden party.

Cultivate Book Launch 1555

How darling is this floral cuff created by our friend, Maggie? Maggie is a high-school student, avid blogger, and PowerSheets users. She's one of my favorite examples of how PowerSheets can be used by all ages in all stages of life!

Cultivate Book Launch 0115

In addition to floral cuffs, we had another fun station where guests could pot a plant to take home with them! My biggest regret of the party was actually leaving mine there when it was time to leave!

Moving onto sweet treats! We were lucky to have a wonderful chocolate bar set up by Choco Homemade Sweetness. I wish I could describe these to you. They were so much more than chocolates; they are a Brazilian delicacy. Made from condensed milk, cocoa powder, butter and chocolate sprinkles (or other toppings), they truly melt in your mouth! There weren't very many extras, but you better believe I packed up a box to go!

Cultivate Book Launch 0229

Our friend Michael of SweetWater Ices was on hand to serve authentic New York-style Italian Ice. Admittedly, I didn't know there was a difference between Italian Ices, but I'm officially a fan! It's safe to say he was a guest favorite, especially among our younger attendees.

  Cultivate Book Launch 0129

I'm glad Traci captured this image of Cottage Luxe's seating arrangement before guests arrived because there wasn't a single moment during the party it was empty. Not only did Rosanne provide the comfiest place to rest, but she joined us to celebrate. We loved having you there, Rosanne!

Cultivate Book Launch 0301

This happy party-goer twirled and spun throughout the whole afternoon :)

Cultivate Book Launch 0719

Brice Hursey was on hand to provide the acoustics for the afternoon. His talent was just the background music we needed!

Cultivate Book Launch 0893

This lady might not officially be on the Cultivate team, but she's one of our biggest cheerleaders! Sarah provides constant encouragement, baked treats, and baby snuggles for all of the in-office ladies.

Cultivate Book Launch 1298

If I had to choose my favorite part of the afternoon, it was celebrating with friends who have encouraged Lara throughout the book-writing journey. Our friend Natasha is one of our MTH Encouragers, and she's known for giving the very best hugs! What a gift to have her (and so many more MTH friends) there to celebrate with us!

Cultivate Book Launch 0547

This post wouldn't be complete without a thank you to our dear friend Ashlee Little of Tailored Occasions. I can truly say if it hadn't been for her, this party would not have happened. She did an incredible job brainstorming, coordinating with vendors, and helping me keep my head on my shoulders during a busy June! Ashlee, on behalf of the entire Cultivate team, thank you for the joy you bring to our lives and making this celebration as magical as it was! We are so grateful for you!

These photos are only a small glimpse into what a wonderful afternoon we had together. To see the rest, head over our Facebook page, and be sure to tag yourself!

A final note: We couldn't have done it without our incredible vendor team! We are so grateful for their support of our brand, and we couldn't recommend them more! Thank you again to The Barn of Chapel Hill, Jolie Joie Designs, Brice Hursey, Ashlee of Tailored Occasions, Instead of Ashes, Choco H Sweetness, SweetWater Ices, Cottage Luxe, and CE Rentals.

We're especially grateful our friend Traci Huffman joined us to capture the day. Not only is she a gifted photographer, but she's a dear friend and one of our team's biggest cheerleaders!

Introducing the Newest Member of the Cultivate Team

Friends, it is with great joy and a happy heart that I'm writing today's blog post. I am thrilled to be introducing you to the newest member of the Cultivate team–Kaylee Hobbs!

We've had the privilege of working alongside Kaylee for the past two months, and I'm so excited for you to get to know her!

First, I want to tell you a little background about the interview process with Kaylee. When we went through the first round of interviews with all the amazing candidates from our job posting, I remember thinking, "Can't we just hire them all?" It wasn't until then that I truly realized how difficult it was going to be to choose just one new member of our team (Spoiler alert: we didn't just choose one!)

Nicole and I joked throughout the process that we weren't just hiring a new team member; we were hiring a new friend. One of the greatest joys of the work we do day in and day out is doing it alongside the women with whom we work. What makes our company unique is that we're invested in one another outside of our work lives. It's no surprise to find Lara and Amber sending garden pictures back and forth, Kristin and Marissa feverishly texting about the new Lilly markdowns, or Emily sending Nicole and myself her newest favorite recipes. A company culture that fosters this kind of team unity has become one of the biggest blessings of my life. All that to say, we knew this was a big hire, and I'd be lying if I said we didn't experience some nerves about it.

During one of our video chats with Kaylee, she started sharing her heart for the Cultivate What Matters brand, particularly for encouraging women right where they are, regardless of their season, and it touched me to the point of tears. Luckily, I was working remotely that day and behind a computer screen, so I could be sneaky. Kristin and I almost simultaneously texted each other with some form of "I want her!" I'm sharing that to tell you this woman's heart for the work that she does is BIG, and it's been evident during the past two months on the team. Her expertise and enthusiasm has enabled us to continue to serve each of you and cheer you on as you cultivate what matters.

We had a close call during the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship where we (Kristin and I) thought we wouldn't be able to hire her if UNC lost to Kentucky (Kaylee's an avid Kentucky Wildcat fan). Lucky for us (and UNC) that didn't happen. (I'm only partially kidding). What a gem this lady is to our team! Now, without further ado, meet the lovely Kaylee Hobbs!

Tell us how you joined the team in a few sentences: I was introduced to the Cultivate brand when I was working for a bridal shop in Kentucky. At the time, I was spending my final summers as a student interning for a large corporation in Texas and enjoyed the challenge, learning opportunities, and people I worked alongside. When it came time to say yes to an official job offer, I couldn't ignore that my heart desired more purpose-filled and intentional work. I applied to Southern Weddings and Cultivate What Matters and immediately felt like it was a great fit! It all happened very quickly–I interviewed in March and become a North Carolinian two months later!

What's your title? Customer Delight and Shop Manager

What have you been doing over the past two months? In office, I have been assisting with the launch of Cultivate, managing the affiliate program, soaking everything in at the Team Summit, learning a lot about Gracie's Garden (from Grace, herself), sending lots of happy mail from the office, and helping out behind the camera during live broadcasts (some of you might have caught a glimpse of me when I accidentally turned the camera around once!) At home, I have been trying to manage the transition from college to the working world, finding community in North Carolina, and learning how to budget my finances and new found free time (I was quite the busy bee in college).

What else will you be doing? In the months ahead, I am looking forward to managing everything Cultivate Shop-related: the affiliate program, Amazon shop and our shipping team. I'll also be joining Jess writing on the Cultivate blog and delighting all our wonderful customers.

You know we're going to be fast friends when you show up twinning :)

Hometown: This question always gets me. I grew up moving around quite a bit, so here's a list of places I have called home over the years: Houston, TX; Benicia, CA; Baton Rouge, LA; Beaumont, TX; Dallas, TX; London, England; Vienna, VA; Lexington, KY

Birthday: May 24

Something you might not know about her: I would eat Panera Mac and Cheese for every meal if I could!

Favorite part about NC: I am going to try to choose just one here... I love that where I live in North Carolina is within an hours trip to the beach. I can pack up and take a beach day on the weekend without having to make many plans beforehand!

Friends, please help us give Kaylee a big CWM welcome in the comments below! She's been such a delight to our team and me personally, and we know you are going to love her just as much as we do! You can also say hi and get to know her on Instagram.
