Meet the MTH Encouragers!

One of the best parts of the PowerSheets community is getting to know other women: sharing our stories, celebrating our progress, and encouraging each other in our struggles. And nowhere is that more true than at the Making Things Happen Conference!

Making Things Happen is primarily about you, your process, and your story. We encourage each attendee to bravely step into the unknown, and walk through the process with open hands. The best part? The attendees don't do it alone. Lara Casey, our Founder, is there to walk them through each step of the process!

Alongside Lara, we have an encouragement team of eight other women who come alongside our attendees, sharing a little bit more of their own stories  and encouraging then in break-out groups as they dig deeper together.

We're excited to introduce our March 2018 Encouragers and hear more of why they're excited about Making Things Happen and what advice they have for our future attendees!

Lara Casey

What She's Most Excited for: "Making things happen means knowing that you don’t have to do it all, be it all, or have it all. MTH is about focusing on what MATTERS–on growing what lasts longer than you. Each time I lead this conference, I do the work alongside the attendees. And every time I'm changed, refreshed, and readied with a new action plan in hand."

Her Encouragement for Attendees:  "Remember that making a mess doesn't mean you become one. At MTH, we uncover what matters to us, and do something about it. The best things in life grow little by little, and MTH is the start of that."

What She's Most Excited for: "I am most looking forward to embracing a new season! There are always new ideas and opportunities that are uncovered at MTH, and I love that the spring season is going to be such a timely season to implement them alongside new friends!"

Her Encouragement for Attendees:  "Come just as you are. Whether you're feeling good in your current season or whether you feel like everything is a mess, you are welcome here! Get ready for two days of solid time focused on you and dozens of new friends who will be cheering you on long after we leave the MTH doors!"

What She's Most Excited for: "Seeing all my FRIENDS!!!!!! Hugging KNW’s babies. Some good quiet time to think."

Her Encouragement for Attendees:  "Be ready to let the unexpected bubble up. Many times I’ve attended MTH with one topic on my mind and left feeling so convicted about another. Being open to let the experience lead you is key!"

Gina Zeidler

What She's Most Excited for: "Solid time to DIG DEEP in a room of like-minded humans! Plus encourage others ON!"

Her Encouragement for Attendees:  "Come as you are, even if you feel like you don't quite get what you are coming for or are nervous! We are so excited to LOVE on you through this experience, and I'm just overjoyed to see you!"

What She's Most Excited for: "I'm most looking forward to growing personally through MTH this year. I'm in such a different season than before. We have a surprise baby coming in five months and a one-year-old at home. So much of my business and my perspective on life has changed this past year, and I just have a feeling that MTH is going to be transformational in a new and exciting way this year!"

Her Encouragement for Attendees:  "My encouragement is that CHANGE CAN HAPPEN. I remember feeling SO stuck in my business and in the hamster wheel that I was running on. I am SO thankful that I'm not the same business owner that I was 3-4 years ago. I'm thankful that I'm not the same wife that I was before. Your circumstances don't define the reality of your future, no matter how STUCK you feel!"

What She's Most Excited for: "I'm most looking forward to meeting and fellowshipping with women, just like me, who are really ready to dig deep into bringing what matters in their lives to life and taking it out into the world to shine!"

What She's Most Excited for: "I’m most looking forward to looking at my entire life - my faith, my motherhood, my work, my relationships - everything - in a brand new light. I’m hungry for fresh perspective, I’m ready for a clean slate, and I know MTH does that for me every single time."

Her Encouragement for Attendees: "Get rid of any expectations you might have. Lay them down. Allow your mind and body the space you need, and allow whatever needs to happen, happen. It’s always the best experience when I let go of my control and expectations and just allow the Lord to guide me through the process. And don’t worry - we will be doing the work right alongside you! Oh - one more thing: waterproof mascara!"

What She's Most Excited for: "After a challenging 2017 which allowed me to start 2018 with a renewed spirit and changed heart, I'm eager to dive into the hard work we do at Making Things Happen to see how it will again change my life in beautiful ways. Each and every time I return home from Raleigh, I am a new person with a zest for living my most purposeful life yet."

Her Encouragement for Attendees: "Come prepared to get out of Making Things Happen what you put into it. Open your heart. Commit to doing the work. Keep expectations minimal. Know the best is yet to come if you let it."

What She's Most Excited for: "I am most looking forward to spending phone-free, intentional time among a group of hopeful women who know that there is strength in community and that we all have the ability to live lives that reflect what matters most to us!"

Our Favorite Things – January

Happy end of January, friends! We know you've been working hard on your PowerSheets goals for 2018 already (or you're gearing up to start today)!  And while the beauty of cultivating what matters is that it doesn't have to cost you a dime, sometimes it's a good motivator to treat yourself to some fun little gifts that support your goals along the way!

So I'm rounding up some of our team's favorite products and tools from January that are helping us make progress as we tackle our PowerSheets Tending Lists this month. Enjoy!

  •  I just got this YETI 30 oz rambler at Christmas, and it has been bringing me so much joy as I work on my daily water intake goal. Drinking lots of water helps me stave off headaches, drowsiness, snack attacks, and colds, so it's always on my daily goal list! This rambler keeps my water super cold, somehow holds a ton of water without being huge, and has a mouth that usually doesn't result in me pouring water all over myself. :)
  • If one of your goals is to fuel your body well, Emily recommends this 100 Days of Real Food blog which has tons of recipes that cut out the processed foods from your life! There's even a cookbook with rave reviews too!
  • I'm so excited that so many have been inspired by Lara to get into the Bible each day in 2018! Kaylee is working her way through the whole Bible in 2018 with the help of The Bible Project for extra information and context as she reads and highly recommends their resources.
  • Need more healthy eating ideas? Amber is committing to her health this year with the help of the Weight Watchers app on her phone! You can use it to log what you eat each day and track your points, as well as get inspiration for new healthy recipes!
  • Alright guys, we know, Lululemon pants are an investment but hear me out. As Jess points out, one or two pairs of these comfortable, durable, high-quality leggings can serve you as well as six pairs of other pants while also helping you minimize the amount of stuff in your life. These also make a fantastic celebration idea for progress on yourPowerSheets fitness goals!
  • Last, but not least, I'm putting this gold FitBit band on my celebration idea wish list as well. Lara gifted our entire team with FitBits for our team health initiative, and I'm positively addicted. Though my lovely work-from-home job and mama life isn't as dressy as it used to be, I would love to still be able to dress my FitBit up and take her out on the town now and then!

What "things" are helping you make progress on your goals this month? We'd love to hear so we can add them to our lists!

Three Ways to Prepare for Making Things Happen

Happy Friday, friends! We are so grateful to know the names of each and every one of the lucky ladies joining us for our March 2018 Making Things Happen Intensive! The Making Things Happen Intensive is our in-person two-day workshop. Under the fearless leadership of our founder, Lara Casey, we answer the hard questions, grow in community, and take a deep dive into our plans to cultivate what matters. It's always one of the highlights of our year!

We sold out more quickly than usual for this conference, and your enthusiasm gives us extra joy and energy as we prepare to welcome you to Chapel Hill! If you are interested in Making Things Happen but did not sign up this time, do not despair! We expect to have a fall event, and the best way to be the first to know is to sign up for our email updates here.

If you are one of our March 2018 attendees, here are three things you can do now to prepare well for the conference!

  1. Keep an Open Mind. To get the most out of your Making Things Happen experience, clear your agenda. Admittedly, I made the mistake of coming to MTH with a plan. If you have something you'd like to work out in your heart and head, that's great. But be careful not to decide exactly what you plan to accomplish in your two days in Chapel Hill. You may miss something better. Our MTH process works, and the only thing you need to do is trust the process and give it your all in the moment.
  2. Observe Your Life. While keeping that first point in mind, start observing your life a little more closely. You don't have to come to any big decisions, but just study your current state of affairs. Include the big and small things. What emotions are you feeling most often? How are you spending your limited time? What habits do you regularly keep? What does your behavior say about your priorities? Tune in and collect some good data over these next two months.
  3. Expect Good Things with Confidence. I'm so proud of each of you for taking the leap to attend MTH! It takes bravery to make a big investment in yourself and be open to change. I know, because I've been there! Know that everyone else in the room is likely a little nervous to commit to change, hoping to make some friends, and a little hesitant about opening up and being vulnerable. Remind yourself that you are loved and worthy. Your story is valuable and inspiring. Come to Chapel Hill ready to embrace the experience, and I know you won't regret it!

Not joining us at this Spring's MTH Conference? That's okay! These three tips can apply to how you approach your personal PowerSheets Prep Work, too!

If you're an MTH alum, we'd love to hear what other tips you might add in the comments! Again, if you are interested in joining us for a future conference, sign up for our email updates so you'll be the first to know when tickets go on sale!

Three Reasons MTH Conference Changed the Course of my Life

If we haven't had the chance to get acquainted yet, I'm Catherine! I'm a grateful editor here at Cultivate What Matters, and I'm your cheerleader and guide for all things Making Things Happen!

Long before I ever dreamed I could work on this team, I took the leap and registered for Making Things Happen in 2016. I didn't know anyone else who would be there, and I didn't know what to expect, but I knew this: I wanted a more intentional, more joyful, more purposeful life. What I got was that, plus an entirely new perspective on my days, practical strategies for prioritizing, and a whole lot of peace and grace.

You've likely heard us talk about Making Things Happen, but maybe you aren't quite sure what it is or if it's for you? Well, I'm here to answer all your questions and share the three biggest reasons MTH changed the course of my life!

See that redhead? She spent two days doing a lot of hard work that continues to have a ripple effect on my life and the lives of those whom I love.

1.  The most important investment you can make in living your best life is TIME.

If you're wondering how you're ever going to make the life you've always imagined possible when all you can do right now is rush from one to-do to the next with your hair on fire, please, please join me at MTH. The single most powerful step I took was to block off the conference dates on my calendar and say to myself, my family, and my employer: these 2-3 days are mine. At MTH we shut out the emails, the text messages, the laundry, the messes, and all the noise (we will even take your phone from you!), and we devote two full, blissfully uninterrupted days to reflecting, dreaming, and strategizing. Sometimes the most important thing you can do when you feel like you don't have a single minute to spare is to hit pause, take a time out, and devote the time to figuring out how you're going to create real change.

2. Beautiful things grow out of getting messy and doing the hard work first.

Around here, we know that good things grow through the dirt, but how often do you really get outside of your comfort zone? We have so many wonderful resources here at Cultivate What Matters, but there is power in getting out from behind your computer and getting your hands dirty. (It is, after all, why we created the PowerSheets!) Lara is going to ask you some challenging questions at MTH. She's going to ask you to be honest with yourself and use your voice to banish your fears. It's kind of like having a personal trainer pushing you to live a more purposeful life (which makes sense, since Lara was once a personal trainer!). I want you to get in the room with us where there's nowhere to hide and believe that you can do hard things. If you're exhausted at the end of your first day at MTH, that's how you know you've put in the work to plant some good seeds.

3. Sharing stories and encouragement changes things.

But MTH isn't all hard work. The challenging moments outside of your comfort zone are balanced with a whole lot of community. There is power when like-minded women sit in a beautiful room with a cup of coffee and share their hearts, their struggles, and their triumphs. MTH is your opportunity to connect with these women in person, let their stories inspire you, and make life-long friends to share in the journey of cultivating what matters with you. I was so amazed at how most of the women at MTH really wanted the same things as I do at the end of the day: deep relationships, a vibrant faith, a healthy lifestyle, and a rich legacy to name a few. I can't tell you how many practical and inspiring ideas I got from these women. Plus, MTH is not just about the two-day experience. We encourage you to exchange information and hold each other accountable, start PowerSheets groups in your city, and grow together long after you leave Chapel Hill!

It's time! Take the leap, and join us in Chapel Hill, NC this March! We can't wait to help you uncover your goals and start making them happen!

Our Early-Bird Rate (more than 50% off ticket price) ends on December 31st, and seats are filling up quickly! You can register here! I'm an email away and I'm ready to talk your ears off about why MTH is a good investment for you. Email me any questions you have or for more information on payment plans!

We know many of you shared your 2018 Vision Board in our Pinterest Contest and are crossing your fingers tight that you are the winner! Don't let that keep you from taking advantage of the Early-Bird Rate before it expires on December 31st. If the winner chosen is already registered, we'll make sure to issue a full refund!

Goal Action Ideas for Parenting Goals

We're back today with the next edition of our Goal Guide series! Many of us are striving toward the same things: deeper relationships, a growing faith, and a healthy lifestyle, to name a few. We created this series to spotlight one of those topics at a time and create a bank of ideas for your Tending List! Now, when you want to make progress on your fitness, faith, or nutrition goals, for instance, you can use these posts for inspiration!

This week's topic is parenting! I'm very new to this (10 weeks to be exact), but being the best mama I can be shot right to the top of my PowerSheets priorities the moment I found out I was expecting. As moms, we want to be more present, patient, and nurturing with our children. One thing that helps me make imperfect progress? Coming up with meaningful and practical ways I can love on my baby well. Thankfully I got some help from the Moms Cultivating What Matters with PowerSheets Facebook group. Veteran mamas, please share your ideas in the comments below as well!

Monthly Goals

  • Read one new-to-you parenting book (We love the idea of inviting your husband to join you for this goal!)
  • Tackle an age-appropriate milestone goal such as sleep training, solid foods, weaning, or potty training
  • Do a seasonal craft, outing, or activity
  • Create a family mission statement
  • Get up-to-date in each child's baby book or scrapbook
  • Plan a family trip
  • Get involved in children's school activities
  • Join a moms' group or play group
  • Learn 2-3 new age-appropriate games
  • Create a chore chart or family values chart to track progress
  • Work through the Parents Goal Companion Guide
  • Pick a topic to learn about and check out several books on that topic from the library
  • Take an infant or child CPR class
  • Frame and hang photos of and artwork by your children

Weekly Goals

  • Have 3-5 sit-down family dinners together
  • Attend church and discuss what you learned
  • Write a letter, email, or diary entry to children to read when they're older
  • Take child to 1-2 activities such as play group, story time, or music class
  • Plan a special one-on-one date for each child
  • Call a mom friend to seek advice
  • Host a play date for each of your children to invite friends over
  • Memorize a weekly Bible verse together
  • Teach your child to cook a new dish with you
  • FaceTime a faraway family member
  • Make artwork together (Don't stress about making a mess!)

Daily Goals

  • Spend an hour of uninterrupted technology-free time with each child
  • Pray for and with each child
  • Read 2-3 books before bedtime
  • Keep your phone in another room during play time or conversations
  • Pack homemade lunch for each child (Adding an encouraging note while you're at it!)
  • Laugh together!
  • Talk about ways your children modeled your family values
  • Show gratitude for good behavior
  • Ask each child to list five things they are grateful for from the day
  • Get outside and active together: ride bikes or take an afternoon walk and talk about what you see
  • Practice patience: respond with grace and say yes whenever possible
  • Tell your children how much you love them!

These are just a few suggestions for items to add to your Tending List each month to make progress on your parenting goals for the year!

We'd love to hear from you: what else would you add to this list?
